What's your background, education and training?
Meet Dr. Matthew Schaeffer – Spine Specialist, Athlete, Patient
As both a spine care physician and a lifelong back pain sufferer, I understand what it means to live with pain—and how powerful the right care can be.
My journey began as a four-year varsity wrestler at The Episcopal Academy in Merion, PA, where I graduated in 1989. I went on to win city-wide wrestling tournaments in Atlanta, Georgia during my time at Emory University, where I also coached wrestling while pursuing my undergraduate degree. But behind every win was a struggle: I’ve lived with chronic, intermittent low back pain since high school, first treated at the Pat Croce Physical Therapy Centers in the early 1990s. Now, over 40 years later—and still an avid skier and active lifestyle advocate—I bring the unique perspective of both doctor and patient to every appointment.
I earned my medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine (1998), completed my Internal Medicine Internship at Lankenau Hospital (1999), and went on to train in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford University, where I served as Chief Resident and graduated in 2002. My post-training career took me to elite institutions including Mount Tam Spine Center in California and Reading Neck and Spine Center in Pennsylvania, where I worked directly alongside top spine surgeons.
Today, I lead Chester County Spine Care, providing advanced non-surgical spine and musculoskeletal treatment across West Chester, Kennett Square, and Exton. With over 20 years of hands-on spine experience, I specialize in identifying the root cause of pain—and helping patients avoid surgery whenever possible.
Whether you're an athlete, weekend warrior, or someone simply trying to stay active, I bring not only medical expertise—but a personal understanding of what you're going through.
Let’s work together to get you moving, living, and feeling better.
